I have a roof rake and that is labor intensive but another problem is build up of ice on windows on the second floor facing north. I didn't get out there with the rake until well after the storm.,How can I get rid of the ice build up so I can open them and try to attack the ice build up on the first floor overhang?

Hi Reuben. I am having lunch with Roger Hankey in a couple days. We are going to discuss ice dams and related topics. I own Kuhl Design+Build ( www.kuhldesignbuild.com ) . I started a division called The Ice Dam Company many years ago ( www.icedamcompany.com ). Another topic of concern beyond ice dams is the phenomenon of attic frosting. The warm air that escapes into the attic often forms a layer of frost on the underside of the roof decking which subsequently melts as temps rise. I have seen quite a bit of damage caused by this moisture. It's a bit sneakier than ice dams because unless you go up into the attic there is no way of telling it is happening. It's yet another reason why people should heed your advice about sealing off bypasses. Thanks for bringing attention to this.
